The Moto2 teams and riders have completed their pre-season testing, which kicked off on Tuesday, 18th February 2025 at the Circuito de Jerez circuit in Spain ahead of Round 1 of the World Championship this week in Thailand, and it was 3 days filled with action and excitement, the perfect precursor to the 2025 season. Across 3 days of testing, we saw lap records smashed, riders (and teams) switching machinery, and 6 new talented and exciting rookies!

Day 1 of the Jerez test was topped by Brazilian rider Diogo Moreira, setting a 1:40.775 in the afternoon session, which was only a tenth shy of Arón Canet's official all time lap record of a 1:40.640, a perfect start to preseason. Less than half a second separated the top 7 at the end of the first day, with the Fantic duo of Arón Canet (1:40.922) and Barry Baltus (1:41.087) looking super strong, a trend that continued across all three days of the test. Manuel González (1:41.121), Zonta van den Goorbergh (1:41.202), Senna Agius (1:41.204) and Deniz Öncü (1:41.243) were the riders within half a second of Moreira on day 1.

Adrián Huertas (1:41.498) also looks very solid ahead of his debut season in the MotoGP paddock, jumping ship after winning the 2024 World Supersport title. Dani Holgado was the next best rookie in P13, with fellow rookies Iván Ortolá, David Alonso, Yuki Kunii and Collin Veijer towards the lower end of the field, however they'd make larger steps on Days 2 and 3. Day 1 also unfortunately saw an injury, with Speed Up rider Alonso López suffering a fractured finger, which ended the Spaniard's pre-season early, however he should be fit to ride in Thailand.

Day 2 saw the official all time lap record obliterated by Manuel González (1:39.768), going a second faster than Moreira's lap time from Day 1. Canet (1:39.851) was a tenth behind González and was the only other rider to dip in to the 1:39's on the 2nd day of testing, with Baltus (1:40.045) just missing out in third place overall. Albert Arenas (1:40.159) jumped up to 4th in the combined timings on Day 2, with Deniz Öncü (1:40.186) and Diogo Moreira (1:40.236) once again at the sharp end.

Jake Dixon (1:40.395) was the top Boscoscuro rider in P7, with the reigning constructor's champions seeming to struggle across all 3 days of testing. Celestino Vietti (1:40.479) was just behind Dixon, with the next fastest Boscoscuro of Filip Salac down in 16th place. However, a massive step was made by Moto3 world champion David Alonso (1:40.715) on Day 2, the Colombian claiming top rookie honours and going 1.4 seconds faster than he managed on Day 1. Dani Holgado (1:40.750) and Adrian Huertas (1:40.818) continued their strong adaptation from Day 1, with the other rookies also making leaps forward as they learn the Moto2 machinery.

The fastest times came on the final day of the testing, and it was Arón Canet (1:39.552) who topped the last test before the start of the season, going over a second faster than his own official lap record. However it was very close at the top, with Canet's teammate Barry Baltus (1:39.556) only 4 thousandths of a second behind the Spaniard. Manuel González (1:39.597) continued with his strong form to take 3rd place in the combined standings, the Intact GP rider half a tenth behind Canet and Baltus. Moto2 sophomore Deniz Öncü (1:39.693) topped the final session of Day 3 to take 4th overall, the young Turk looking like a real dark horse on his KTM Ajo machine.

Diogo Moreira (1:39.981) and Zonta van den Goorbergh (1:40.112) also featured at the front on the final day in 5th and 6th respectively, and it was once again Adrián Huertas (1:40.156) who was the fastest rookie in P6, and by quite some distance, with Dani Holgado (1:40.695) and David Alonso (1:40.697) setting almost the exact same time in P19 and P20 respectively. Collin Veijer (1:40.741) and Ivan Ortola (1:40.744) were also within half a tenth of Holgado, meaning the rookie of the year title could be a very interesting subplot this season. One Boscoscuro rider who struggled the entire test was Sergio Garcia, and unfortunately the Spaniard suffered a crash on the final day of testing, and will now miss the Thai GP with a fractured left hand.

A final note from the testing action is how the Forward Racing duo of Jorge Navarro and Álex Escrig fared, and it seems like they may be a touch closer to the Kalex and Boscoscuro machines, and hopefully they'll be able to fight for the points paying positions this year. That being said, it's the Thai GP this week at the Chang International Circuit, and the competition looks super close, so we should be in for another year of excitement in Moto2!
